If you are near an Amtrak station at both ends of the tandem's journey, they take almost any size, provided it weighs 50 lbs or less. The prices are reasonable, and you don't have to disassemble much. They even sell super-sized boxes (for a single bike, but you can combine 2 for a tandem).
