David,
After a very brief flirtation with the weight weenie world back around 1975, I came to my senses. I had my steel framed bike down to ~19 lbs. with Hi-E wheels and 250g tires, alloy everything and so on.
After breaking 60 minutes on a 25 mile TT (which I attribute to a very strong tail wind on the return leg) I realized that 1 or 2 less beers or 20 more miles a week made a lot more difference than a few pounds off the bike.
Dust caps still looked geeky back then! Today people pay $25-30 for what we used to throw away!
