The second photo is of a production item. Earlier versions date to at least early 1970's (pair came original on a 1973 Paramount tandem I have). So this item wasn't just created for the MTB era.
I like the look of the converted skewer, more svelt, but wonder if it will be strong enough? Thinking more torque required to hold a pillar in place than a wheel hub.
Wondering now about other uses for a skewer (stem bolts, bag/pannier mounts, neither seems practical).
