Subject: [CR] Otero on eBay

I knew Enrique Otero, maintain a close relationship with his family and collect his bikes. The Otero photos that Dale so kindly posted on CR were taken of bikes brought out from the private Otero storage in Madrid for me to photograph. This Otero now on eBay, most likely from the late 1950's, has a multitude of problems. It has an awful repaint, no decals, and worse, most of the parts shown were never meant for this bike. If questioned the seller will admit to this-they are simply pieces that were from the same bike shop that the seller got the rusted frameset. He just married what he had to the frameset. The large chainwheel is not from this bike, and most likely the missing front derailleur would have been a lever type-possibly Simplex. This is not a time-trial bike. The seller has refused to send me the serial numbers. This bike should be saved but will need a good repaint, original decals and proper parts. In the end I would not be interested since the cost of restoration would be far, far greater than the value of the final bike. It would have been better if the seller sold the frameset as found and left the restoration to someone familiar with the marque.
