Subject: [CR] Question: 1954 Cyclo Benelux Tourist with 1/8"-toothed freewheel

Greetings---

I have a question about the 1954 Cyclo Benelux Tourist derailleur.

Frank Berto on p. 168 of The Dancing Chain (which pictures the derailleur) states that it can handle 4 or 5 speeds, a 13-28 tooth freewheel and a 20-tooth difference between the chainwheels with a 3/32-in chain.

I'M WONDERING WHAT THE VARIOUS NUMBERS ARE WHEN ONE USES A 1/8-IN FREEWHEEL AND CHAIN. SPECIFICALLY:

1. NUMBER OF SPEEDS IT WILL ACCOMMODATE; 2. FREEWHEEL TOOTH RANGE; 3. MAXIMUM TOOTH DIFFERENCE BETWEEN FRONT CHAINWHEEL AND REAR COGS.

The derailleur in question may also be seen in Peter Brueggeman's article on the Classic Lightweights website. It is the first photo on the upper left-hand side of the page.

Any information will be greatly appreciated!
