I think I'm about as easygoing a fellow as you're likely to meet, but every once in a while something really gets my goat. I would normally be much more circumspect about this, but since it has been put on the table, I'll add my two cents.

I'm all for Dale doing whatever it is he thinks needs doing. I appreciate his tactful, discrete and judicious wielding of the large mallet. He may not have time to nip everything in the bud, but to my eyes, he does a marvelous job of maintaining harmony. I consider the vast majority of the folks who hang out in Dale's virtual garage to be friends, and my expectation is they should be treated as such.

What I find truly irritating, are people who presume to usurp Dale's authority, who repeatedly create disharmony, whose sole function seems to be complaining to the entire list when they think something is not on topic (ironically being just as off-topic - if not more so - than what they complain about), and who seem not to realize that the easiest solution to a post that doesn't suit you is the delete button. In the interest of retaining civility, I'll leave out a couple other comments I was tempted to make.

Hopefully folks have the sense to realize that interjecting contention tends to pull us away from being "on topic", and also corrodes the sense of community, which is just as great an asset as is the collective store of wisdom that dwells here.

Goodnight, and happy riding,

\r?\n> << Dale, ...(snip)... I joined

\r?\n> specifically for discussions related directly to vintage,

\r?\n> classic and KOF items as stated in your CR rules.

\r?\n> ...(snip)...

\r?\n> Are you going to step in more and be more proactive about

\r?\n> inforcing the CR

\r?\n> rules?  Seriously Dale, I WANT TO READ PEOPLE's

\r?\n> POSTINGS, but the filtering

\r?\n> quantity-wise gets flat out tiring.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> My I suggest that you allow a couple others to do the

\r?\n> enforcement - the likes

\r?\n> of Jerome Moos and Bob Freitas for example?  Jerome

\r?\n> knows one helluva lot...Bob

\r?\n> can be short and direct when it's needed...they have been

\r?\n> around awhile...the

\r?\n> vast majority of us here know who they are.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Please address those questions in the plea of sorts above.

\r?\n> >>

\r?\n>

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Hmmm.

\r?\n> Well the first point to be made is that the list is not

\r?\n> moderated, i.e., I do not read & clear messages prior to

\r?\n> their

\r?\n> being sent to all the members. I get to read them just like

\r?\n> everyone else.

\r?\n> So I am reduced to reading them as I can... and calling

\r?\n> people to task when and if I see that they have onerously

\r?\n> broken the rules. I honestly do not think there are as many

\r?\n> annoying violations of the rules as you seem to suffer

\r?\n> through Robert! Granted, some things irritate me more than

\r?\n> others (rudeness, vulgarity, using the list as a testing

\r?\n> ground for pending eBay offerings for instance) But I also

\r?\n> remember when I was a newbie in computers so maybe I tend to

\r?\n> be more understanding with unintentional goofs.

\r?\n> Of course, I also run a very busy bike shop and organize

\r?\n> many cycling events so that I miss some mail. In the end, I

\r?\n> do what I can and plod along.

\r?\n> But taking your question to heart, I do not at all reject

\r?\n> the idea of  Bob or Jerry helping in that way.

\r?\n> Both I consider excellent fellow and good friends. What say

\r?\n> you, fellows?

\r?\n> Subject: Re: [CR] spoke question & snark

\r?\n>

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Okay...

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Everyone has had their chance to wax poetic, be the knight

\r?\n> on the shining horse

\r?\n>

\r?\n> for the person getting "picked on", rally the wagons, etc.,

\r?\n> etc., etc.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> For the past two years, I have made two points over and

\r?\n> over - which of course

\r?\n> has gotten people all riled up each time:

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 1.  This is a site for the discussion of vintage,

\r?\n> classic and KOF bikes, parts,

\r?\n>

\r?\n> and their history as defined by Dale in the CR rules.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 2.  This is a site for the discussion of restoration,

\r?\n> mechanical repair, etc.,

\r?\n> of vintage, classic and KOF bikes and parts as defined by

\r?\n> Dale in the CR rules.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Now of course, each time everyone has gotten riled up -

\r?\n> including some tossing

\r?\n> outright profanity at me in public - Dale hops in and both

\r?\n> publicly and

\r?\n> privately reminds everyone including yours truly that it's

\r?\n> his website and he

\r?\n> enforces the rules.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Which is fine by me...for awhile...as I sit quietly and

\r?\n> watch over a period of

\r?\n> 2-3 months a 1000 plus emails land in my inbox of which

\r?\n> easily 1/3 are OFF-

\r?\n> TOPIC...mostly "attaboys" and general mechanics questions

\r?\n> and discussions

\r?\n> instead of vintage/classic/KOF specific mechanics questions

\r?\n> and discussions.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Then of course having gotten tired of following the CR

\r?\n> rules while watching

\r?\n> others blatantly violate them - I run into a bad day and

\r?\n> stick my ugly head up

\r?\n> on the radar again - just like this morning.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> As a case in point, it got so bad at one point awhile back

\r?\n> that one evening, CR

\r?\n>

\r?\n> became the new Craigslist Helpdesk.  When I pointed

\r?\n> that out, I got the usual

\r?\n> heat including ad-homs.  Surprisingly, even Dale

\r?\n> joined in on the attack to

\r?\n> which I asked paraphrasing:  "So are you okay Dale

\r?\n> with CR becoming a helpdesk

\r?\n> for Craigslist when Craigslist already has one?

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I never did get an answer...

\r?\n>

\r?\n> So, regarding this morning, let's get down to it:

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 1.  Can I resuse spokes?  OFF-TOPIC

\r?\n>

\r?\n> It's a general mechanics question which has been answered a

\r?\n> 100+ times over at

\r?\n> bikeforums.net, forums.cycling.com and USENET courtesy of

\r?\n> none other than Jobst

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Brandt and company - all archived by Google, Bing and Yahoo

\r?\n> search engines.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 2.  Source for Robergel and Union-Berg?

\r?\n> ON-TOPIC

\r?\n>

\r?\n> I was happy to see that part because it was another

\r?\n> reminder that once again I

\r?\n> really do need to ask about the Berg part - I'm not

\r?\n> familiar with it - assuming

\r?\n>

\r?\n> it's the same Union that I am familiar with.

\r?\n>

\r?\n>

\r?\n> 3.  Source for DT Swiss 2.0/1.8?  GOES BOTH WAYS

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Is DT KOF as a spoke?  Some would say yes...some would

\r?\n> say no...both sides are

\r?\n> right in my honest opinion.  Why did I go off on the

\r?\n> poster?  Simply because it

\r?\n>

\r?\n> told me flat out that the poster couldn't be bothered to do

\r?\n> a little research

\r?\n> with a search engine with the 8 fingers and 2 thumbs

\r?\n> already splayed out across

\r?\n>

\r?\n> the keyboard.  It took me less than 30 seconds to get

\r?\n> a listing - one of which

\r?\n> was Harris Cyclery offering custom lengths from blanks.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Now before you guys start firing off those rockets again -

\r?\n> understand that we

\r?\n> have had this argument before - and a couple others on this

\r?\n> list have expressed

\r?\n>

\r?\n> the same annoyance that I have with those we can't be

\r?\n> bothered to do a little

\r?\n> work up front with the tools they already have and know how

\r?\n> to use beforehand.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Am I done yet with that point?  Actually not...because

\r?\n> not only do people not

\r?\n> make use of those listed search engines - but they also

\r?\n> ignore BIKELIST.ORG's

\r?\n> own search engine which is linked and noted 3 times over at

\r?\n> a minimum when you

\r?\n> follow the directory to join, follow the directory to

\r?\n> browse the listings, and

\r?\n> when you follow the directory to review the CR rules as I

\r?\n> periodically do.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Dale refuses to say it, but I will.  Folks that do

\r?\n> that in my honest opinion,

\r?\n> whether unintentionally or intentionally, are displaying a

\r?\n> lack of respect for

\r?\n> those who maintain the site and list.  BIKELIST.ORG's

\r?\n> seach engine works fine -

\r?\n>

\r?\n> and even then when a few of us who do use it don't find

\r?\n> something - we note it

\r?\n> and apologize in ADVANCE before posting just in case.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Now I am going to wrap things up...with a plea of sorts

\r?\n> addressed to Dale more

\r?\n> than anyone else:

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Dale, I joined CR not to experience bikeforums.net,

\r?\n> forums.bicycling.com or

\r?\n> USENET.  I joined specifically for discussions related

\r?\n> directly to vintage,

\r?\n> classic and KOF items as stated in your CR rules.

\r?\n> Also I did not join to

\r?\n> witness an IT helpdesk for Craigslist.  Even some of

\r?\n> the eBay help stuff is

\r?\n> crossing the line.  eBay also has help forums and a

\r?\n> chat forum.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> It has gotten to the point again where after trying very

\r?\n> hard to read people's

\r?\n> posts - I find myself realizing, here we go again...and

\r?\n> doing a pipe/mv of the

\r?\n> queues to /dev/null and restarting my qmail on my server.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Are you going to step in more and be more proactive about

\r?\n> inforcing the CR

\r?\n> rules?  Seriously Dale, I WANT TO READ PEOPLE's

\r?\n> POSTINGS, but the filtering

\r?\n> quantity-wise gets flat out tiring.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> My I suggest that you allow a couple others to do the

\r?\n> enforcement - the likes

\r?\n> of Jerome Moos and Bob Freitas for example?  Jerome

\r?\n> knows one helluva lot...Bob

\r?\n>

\r?\n> can be short and direct when it's needed...they have been

\r?\n> around awhile...the

\r?\n> vast majority of us here know who they are.

\r?\n>

\r?\n> Please address those questions in the plea of sorts above.
