Hi Peter. Like many tandems the Paramounts were fillet brazed. This allowed much greater latitude in terms of sizes and geometries than lugs which have a fairly narrow range of angles and acceptable tube sizes. Tandems typically use oversize and non round shapes as well as twin laterals which can be a nightmare using lugs. The internal lugs were used on their other fillet brazed models [e.g. Sports Tourer, Super Sport] and even the ubiquitous electro-welded models [e.g. Varsity, Continental, etc.] This undoubtedly added weight but probably some welcome strength and stiffness to a tandem. The tubing, i believe, was the same, fairly heavy gauge 4130 CroMo as in the ST and SS models. Cheers. Billy Ketchum; Chicago, IL; USA.
I'm interested in an early 70s Schwinn Paramount racing tandem with a complete Caqmpagnolo Nuovo Record kit. The owner describes it as being internally lugged, and not Nervex. Anyone on the list that has knowledge of this era of the Paramounts, I'd appreciate the help.
