Since Ben was trying to make a too-short-bolted caliper work on the front, I thought I would suggest securing it to the crown using an allen-nut from a V-brake pad, put inside the steerer (and with any needed washers or modest spacer needed to fully secure the caliper with a proper amount of thread engagement and allow the nut to turn a bit easier.). The Allen nut has a 5mm recess, allowing a 5mm allen wrench to fit through the rear hole on the crown. A cosmetic add-on might include a short length of 6mm threaded rod thru the rear hole, secured with a thin nut inside and a normal nut on the back, just for looks.
