Hi John. That's a good point. Several people have alluded to a bracing effect of a rear brake mounted conventionally. One is probably at greater risk w/ the brake mounted forward. But a brake properly adjusted and firmly installed is usually proof against such a mishap. Many years ago the front Weinmann sidepull on my Schwinn Varsity loosened up and the arms went flying off into space. It was quite disconcerting. I'm a bit more savvy about brake setup these days and usually apply a bit of beeswax to the locknut threads {kudos to Grant Peterson}. Cheers. Billy Ketchum; Chicago, IL; USA.

VERY INTERESTING!  How things we do by instinct everyday without a thought do demand a second look, Thanks everyone for all your input. NOW which way mounted is the safest IF the bloody nut falls off or the spindle snaps? This is something NO one has mentioned! Cheers John Crump OldgoingnutsBrit, Parker. Co USA
