Chuck, Bob, and all,

Thanks for the encouraging perspectives. As one of the "heretics" on this list with a Shimano SIS 6-speed rear derailleur on my Peugeot UO-18 and a Campagnolo Chorus 9-speed group on my KOF Eisentraut, I appreciate this church-like garage that serves as a shrine to the friction-shifting, all-steel (almost) bikes of the past - and my own history, too. (The gear on most bikes here was "the latest thing" long ago when I first lusted after or rode on it...)

I hang out here for the same reasons I go to church every Sunday: I live in hope of redemption and repentance despite my grievous (modernist) sins.:-) I get to see (if not touch) many icons from the past (Pierce, Selbach, Hurlow, et al) and read the reflections of many saints (Hoefer, Brown, Freitas, Sachs, Foddering, Stone, and more).

I have the utmost respect for those of you who are dedicated to restoring and riding classic bikes in their original state(s), down to the last detail, even if doing so is not my particular "call."

This community is an important denominational branch of the larger cycling "religion," too, in which (I hope) all who pedal in circles shall be redeemed - even those riding with CF/plastic, TIG welded aluminum, clipless, and click-shifting brifters.

Ecumenically yours, and with all due respect to those who uphold high standards,

Jon Spangler a sinner who is grateful to be admitted to the garage in Alameda, CA USA

I'm not seeing this as off topic. Off topic bikes have been mentioned but not much "ink" has been wasted on them. It seems very relevant to me.
