Peter,

At that period in time in the UK most hand made frames were sold as complete bicycles only if the customer so requested, and then most were built to customer specs. My own bikes were constantly evolving as I could afford better equipment. Everybody I rode with shopped the same way. If buying a complete bike new, it was customary to walk into your LBS, pick a frame from the row hanging up, or order one to your own specs, specify the componentry, and go back later to pick up your completed bike. In my view, there is no issue with changing components. Drive-trains, brakes, etc., were all wear items. Very few owners would have replaced worn items with "older" components, unless they were still available over the counter.

Just my 1.5 cents worth......

I've an early 1950s Hetchins that is completely unrestored with a complete and original 50s Campagnolo group, plus the bike was a rare one owner bike during it's riding life until I purchased from a CR member a few years ago. I do intend to continue to ride her, but also to show at the CR. As it is a British cycle I'm considering taking the Campy group off and going with mostly British componants, Chater Lea chainset, Alp brakes (Thank You Hilary), Harden Bacon Slider hubs on Dunlop Stainless rims, etc, etc. Am I bastardizing an unrestored gem by altering it even though keeping period correct. Opinions valued from list members.
