Ted,

Peugeot UO-series bikes rode - and still ride - very well. They were among the most nimble and best-handling entry-level ten-speeds of their era, which is why they were so popular.

I have upgraded rather than restored my mom's white 1970s UO-18 mixte but I sure as hell recommend riding it. Replacing the steel-rimmed original rims alone gives the bike a much nicer (and safer) ride.

If you want to restore it, go right ahead. If you want to ride and enjoy it, a few tasteful modifications (like the ones I did on my UO-8 in 1971) will make it a very sweet ride: aluminum rims, a Brooks Pro seat, and a Suntour Cyclone or GT rear derailleur all were oft-recommended upgrades at Collins' Cycle Shop in Eugene, OR.

I had a good friend who had Cyclart do a full Cat 1 restoration on his UO-8. He's had it from new and it looked beautiful. Phil Brown Under the good weather today in Oakland, Calif.

The same thing happened to me and the first thing I did was panic. Then I popped a (prescribed) Klonopin and dozed back off. Still no CR mail at 8:45am. Checked the CR archives and noticed mail from today was exchanging hands. At this point I figured I was either "in the cooler" or "booted." So I promptly popped in Russ Meyer's "Faster Pussycat--Kill! Kill!" DVD and watched the wildly wicked and booted Tura Satana (RIP) carve 'round the desert in her sporty 356.

What is the cheapest model Peugeot bicycle anyone should bother putting "proper restoration" time toward? Like is a UO-8 worth a complete and proper restoration? My guess is there is no definitive model as the models we discuss in this forum all seem to be classics.
