You are right. I too discovered that and I use Thunderbird. With both lists I have a "Reply" and a "Reply List" button. With the old list the first button replied to the sender (off list), but with Google Groups they both reply to the List address. One way I can send a private email to the poster is to copy his/her email address and past in in the To: field. Alternatively, Thunderbird also has an option to Reply All, and when I use that it replies to the list with cc to the poster, so I delete the list address and change the "cc" to "To".
