Back in the day (early 70s) it was explained to me that many of the European bicycle makers produced a few Campagnolo equipped bikes for marketing purposes.
During the US Bike Boom, the buzz words were "10 Speed Racing Bike".
The Campy bikes were made to support that image and to be wall hanger displays at bike shops rather than readily available models.
Of course there were exceptions to that: as mentioned, Lejeune, Gitane Super Corsa, Atala, Bottecchia and so on.
For some of the smaller makers or lesser known brands it was likely true.
At the height of the bike boom anything with 2 wheels and derailleurs called a 10 Speed Racing Bike sold faster than you could put them together!
