Yes they really are 5 mm bearings. I've got some extras maybe one headset's worth if you want them. They are not hard to find nor expensive though. 100 would cost you $5.60 from Fastenal and they are even grade 25. See this link. http://www.fastenal.com/web/products/detail.ex?sku=0987732&ucst=t Stronglight also made the headsets and they were quite superior to the Bardon. Nice chrome and polished races etc. I had Stronglight on my first two Taylor tandems, one from the 60s and the one I ordered in 1978, but that was the last of the Stronglights. The ones I ordered in 1983 all came with the Bardon. They didn't come with bearings and it took some sleuthing to figure out they should have 5 mm. I repaired a fork from a 60s Taylor about the time I bought a batch of 1983 tandems and was stuggling with the bearings, and I asked him to measure his bearings for me. He gave me a decimal inch number that was very close to 5 mm. Put them in my Taylor and they work perfectly . And yes the Taylors built with 28 x 1 French steerers. They emulated the French in many ways. The racks, geometries, and even their trailer was a direct copy of a French trailer. They asked permission to copy it and the French maker said yes by all means and would you please make some for us as they are a pain in the ass to make.
