As the Aluminum alloy "rivets" are of a piece with the pedal bodies and deformed by peening over the holes in the cages, it would probably be necessary to chisel/drill off the peened over portions and use threaded fasteners into tapped holes to reattach the cages as is commonly done on pedals. I don't see why it wouldn't work fine, but wouldn't look original.
