Let me first point out that expendable, replaceable parts (tires, tubes, cable housing, bar tape [not SPLASH!], etc.) have long been given a pass in the On/Off Topic debate. So, John, I think you're on safe ground with this question.
I recommend steel, forged and machined to extremely high tolerance. Good British steel, as a matter of fact. Pioneered in Birmingham, tested on rugby players, brought to prominence by a famous/infamous modern-day bike racer. And, even more importantly for me, working much better than the POS it replaced in *my* right hip joint. The Birmingham Hip Resurfacing by Smith & Nephew. YMMV, as it requires healthy surrounding bone tissue.
