Friday, on my ride along the South Bay Bicycle Trail near LAX, I came upon a couple on a Cannondale tandem repairing a rear tire; I learned that they had owned that bicycle for 20 years. A few miles later, I came upon a second couple at a pit-stop on their Santana tandem who said this was their west coast bicycle when they visited their son in LA; they have a second tandem at their home in New Jersey. So, bicycles built for two are still out there. Though, transporting tandems require a larger vehicle than other bicycles; that may be a limiting factor. Of course, LA has a huges population; tandems per thousand may be within the margin of error with other parts of the country.
