yeah it happens...probably alot more common to bikes that actually get ridden...or kept outside.

\r?\n> I've seen it, a couple times, but
\r?\n> there was always some extra influence.
\r?\n> First one, an early 80's Univega. - went to fix it up for a
\r?\n> friend and when
\r?\n> I removed the ducktape from the toptube the tube looked
\r?\n> like it had burst.
\r?\n> Plenty of rust, But I suspect frozen water actually did in
\r?\n> the weakened
\r?\n> tube.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> Seccond one, Early70's Motobecane. Cracked in front of the
\r?\n> seatlug. Thinned
\r?\n> from rust, but cracked from too much twisting from how he
\r?\n> rode. The rust
\r?\n> would have gotten that one eventually.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> Third one rusted through chainstay. Forget the bike. had
\r?\n> some bad wheel rub
\r?\n> at one point that wasn't touched up and it rusted through.
\r?\n>
\r?\n>
\r?\n> Not exactly what was described, and all began with some
\r?\n> level of abuse.
\r?\n> Outdoor winter storage was the common thing, and I believe
\r?\n> at least 2 of the
\r?\n> 3 were ridden in winter on salty roads and never cleaned.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> Fortunately none of them were high end bikes.

\r?\n> How many people here have personally as opposed to it
\r?\n> happening to a
\r?\n> friend, cousin etc. had classic steel frames experience an
\r?\n> actual
\r?\n> structural failure due solely to rust? I've never
\r?\n> seen or heard of it
\r?\n> happening but have learned not to put much weight in my own
\r?\n> narrow
\r?\n> anecdotal experience. If Fraysee is anywhere close to
\r?\n> correct there
\r?\n> should be hundreds or more probably thousands of such tales
\r?\n> out there
\r?\n> to be related by list members.
\r?\n>
\r?\n> How about a show of hands?
