Campagnolo never used 6Al-4V Ti in the OT period, they used CP. If they had used 6Al-4V instead, there probably would never have been any problems. 6Al-4V and similar biphase alloys were available then but harder to source and more expensive. By the time the Super Record gruppo was rolled out, car racing people been using those alloys for at least 10 years and the aerospace industry for roughly 20. The mechanical properties of all this stuff was in the open literature by the late '50s, but I doubt Campagnolo's people had ever seen them.
