Well, this being my first GoogleGroup membership, I've spent a while today trying to decide the best way to post messages, to view posts, and to direct emails, etc.
*Mail:*
Seems to me that subscribing to the individual (not digest) e-mails now makes sense - for me. In the past, I'd always simply viewed the archives and then cut and pasted to emails as needed. Because I'd already had a Google account set up but rarely used the G-mail before, I'm now directing all of the CR List posts to that account.
I believe it would also be very easy for anyone to set up an additional alternate Google account and to then route all of their notifications to that dedicated email address. It's cost-free anyway, so why not. Remember, you can always switch over *this specific* GoogleGroup setting for a different e-mail - in case you have other GoogleGroup memberships, as well.
*Image Attachments and Links:*
I see that the largest image size accepted for uploaded attachments is 2000 x 2000 pixels. This is really quite large - especially if your photo is already focused on a specific area which you wish to draw attention to. Attaching a large image to *this* group is better than on some discussion groups. For example, BikeForums accepts posting of extremely large internet hosted images in the form of directly onto a page. However this can make loading a page horribly slow for those with slow internet connection speeds. Their uploaded attachment file provisions are very limited in size (only 175kb per image, I believe) and the clarity is usually not very acceptable.
With the new CR LIST attachments it is nice to be able to preview a reasonably sized thumbnail before committing to a larger view or download. This "might" be preferable to listing numerous photo-hosted urls in a message... which you would then need to click onto, one at a time, whether or not the image is something you would have wanted to view.
If your internet connection is painfully slow loading there is still the option of using a photo-hosting service and the attaching a linked URL. Of course, this typically what we had used previously on the OLD List, but it is still has a useful option here.
*Advanced E-mail Features... A Question:*
It also has occurred to me that we can send and view posts *on the GoogleGroup pages* e-mails which include "emoticons". Much as I usually hate the distracting clutter of those things, we now may be able to minimize the number of mis-interpreted remarks - such as when a member had actually "thought" his posted remark would clearly be understood by all as ironic or genially sarcastic... rather than malicious and inflammatory.
*Posting to the CRList:*
This is probably redundant many times over at this point, and perhaps I'm wrong, but we STILL must all reply to posts *via e-mail* - *ONLY*... even though the basic GoogleGroup page format presents members of any groups with the option of responding directly from a post being viewed on a Group page... is that correct?
This learning curve and adaptation to an unfamiliar new venue may kill me or drive me mad. But it may be a blessing - if we all survive the transition. Thanks to everyone for their patience!
Now, if I can just figure out how to use them newfangled telephones without a rotary dial to turn... [?]
