The Flyer model was made from 1938. This one however dates from around 1970. The Carlton website is mistaken in that the new numbering system starting with a W did not start until sometime in 1974. Additionaly H and A prefix numbers were used in 1974. G numbers were 1973, F 1972, E 1971 and D 1970 - however as with lots of things Raleigh its uncertain just what the letter prefixes meant in year terms, model year, actual year, financial year - they would all be different.

The BB is stamped with two entirely different numbers. On the drive side, "D8852" and on the non-drive side "166671." I understand that the Flyer model was produced in various configurations for a number of years dating from as early as 1949. I presume this bike was made before Raleigh took over in the late 60's but that's just a guess. Anyone have any knowledge of Carlton's system for serial numbers or any other thoughts?
