All my bikes use clips & straps, so it's not a problem for me. My daily shoes are Shimano SPD-R shoes, with modified Look-type cleats (they started with shallow slots, which I've deepened). These sometimes get used with my '74 Raleigh International. I've also got a pair of Duegi's that I always use with my '82 Olmo Competition. The red & yellow paint job on the Olmo goes nicely with the black & yellow shoes. I have a couple of spare sets of cleats for the Duegi's, but I am careful to minimize how much I walk on them. My stock of shoes also includes a funky blue pair of Detto Sarroni's (not pretty shoes - the uppers are blue nylon mesh), and a pair of fake leather Detto's (still haven't nailed on the TA cleats. These shoes have the standard perforated leather uppers and leather sole). Recently, I picked up a pair if Diadora Voyager's, which are affordable modern shoes with a modestly classic appearance. If you can ignore the velcro straps, the black fake leather uppers look good, and the rubber sole has shallow slots for use with traditional pedals. They include the fittings for SPD's, if you are so inclined.
