It's pretty quiet up here in Toronto as well, but at least I have our 200km Brevet to look forward to tomorrow with the local Randonneur club.

Regarding a master link for the chain, I also wouldn't have any fears regarding using one - even quite powerful motorcycles used them until the early 1980's. Remember that "fish swim with the current" regarding direction for fitting the spring link.
