I think it is interesting that the rider's positions on their newly-invented safety bicycles is almost that of the position that was forced on the earilier riders of ordinary (highwheel) bicycles.

Notice how close the bars are to the rider's vertical body position, like a highwheeler. Hadn't evolved yet to the more stretched out position of the 'teens?
