I got very good service out of a set of Weyless hubs I had years ago. I got mine from George Crook at Bikeways of Atlanta, on Chamblee-Dunwoody Road, back in, oh, musta been 1978.
George (who according to some folks was a controversial figure among the Souther Bicycle League) sold me my first bike with good tubing, a Puch Royal X built of 531 with plain lugs and SunTour dropouts. The stock wheels were basic 27-in Weinmann rims laced up to Normandy Sport hubs - but came with a 14-22 Regina Oro freewheel. Go figure. Anyway, George built me a tubular wheelset, some sort of butted stainless spokes joining Weyless hubs and Mavic Montlhery rims, finished off with the infamous Hutchinson Super Sprint tubies. The front one was wierd - it had a latex tube. Those tires served me surprisingly well, too.
The quick release on one cracked - somewhere in the handle, and part of the handle just fell off. The hubs themselves, however, were quite smooth, and I really liked them, but wondered what I would do when it came time to service them.
They went with the bike, when I sold that wonderful old Puch to a buddy of mine in Macon in early 1987. What can I say - I just HAD to have a 1966 Fender Vibroluxe Reverb amp I'd found. Kenny promptly had the bike stolen from him, and I've kept my eyes open for it ever since.
