I'm installing a MAVIC headset onto my new old bike (I got the Cinelli Centurion from Sterling Peters recently). This is the headset cap that doesn't have a separate locknut, the one piece has a pinch bolt to tighten it. I need to cut off about 1/8" of fork to make it work at its max height. My question: If I do this, will I be setting myself up for a narrow stack height headset when I change it in the future? Right now I'm installing a complete MAVIC groupo. I want to keep it intact, but I have traditionally not had great luck with ball bearing headsets and tend to switch over to needle bearing headsets for reliability.
I apologize if this groupo is post 1985, I'm not really sure when they started to make it. It is pretty classic looking and a pure friction setup. The rear mech is kind of a Campy copy geometry wise.
