Mr. Baylis noted:

"to put them under just the final clear coat without "leveling" them with clear. That way they still have the "raised " feel of stripes on top but have the protection of the clearcoat. On things I do for my modern work, I'll bury the pinstripes with the rest of the decals so the final finish is totally smooth.

This pinstriping thing is interesting. I recently purchased an old Mondia Special, somewhat the worse for wear, but the original finish is still clean enough to preserve. Looking at it closely I'm reminded of how delicate and artful Mondia pinstriping was in the 60s and 70s. Who knows if one person did them all, but whoever it was had real flair. I've seen pinstripes that look "dead" somehow. Too perfect, no pizzazz...they just sit there on the tube. But, the pinstripes on the classic 70s Mondias all have a delicacy and liveliness that's impossible to beat, and--it seems--difficult to duplicate... they appear to me as if the pinstriper laid them on very quickly and energetically...but with the greatest refinement and precision. Talented painter, whoever they were.
