Neither. "Marcel Berthet" is the model _name_ and 23 is the model _number_ of these pedals. I agree that they are one of the greatest designs ever, way better in design than any pedal made before the Shimano PDT-100, and unequalled for elegance of design.

I used to use these almost exclusively, until I caught the SPD disease...

Marcel Berthet was a great French racer. I believe he was the protagonist of the famous story of the broken fork repaired in a blacksmith's shop in the middle of the Tour de France.
