david.. it was de rigeur for all lugs supplied with cutouts to be highlighted with a contrasting color. masi did this with dubois lugs that had the 'heart-like' window. these lugs came from nervex/dubois already window-ed. the firm had a host of pre- punched windows available. i ordered thousand's of these from france in the early '70s and the invoice always had the words, 'avec couer', tho' the cutouts resembled a triangle more than a heart. when i bought my stash, the supplier was Etabissement Aime DuBois. at the time, both dubois and nervex were branded products of that firm. if i recall, the dubois lugs were called ref. 32. the nervex lugs were called ref. 49. in my catalog, both sets, as were others, are termed 'professional lug set.' as a matter of fact, the leaflet contained on lee's jpeg from 1974 includes text LIFTED FROM the masi gran criterium road test in march 1971 as seen in bicycling magazine, it still being published in san francisco by leete publications. the roadtest highlited the fact, (remember-march 1971), that eddy merckx owned 20, tom simpson rode one, but it was merked as a peugeot, the entire monark, as well as the entire ferretti (sp) teams rode them, that sprint icon (my words...) antonio maspes always rode one, etc., etc...

to address your query re: simpson. previous to using ref. 32 lugs, masi used ref. 49 (curly nervex pro's) for a good deal in the sixties, simpson's days, so it wouldn't be unthinkable that his peugeot/masi would have these lugs. as far as the u.s. built frames go, they used the ref. 32 lugs until the lost wax versions of the same were cast by Microfusione Italiana. and since it's sunday a.m. and the weather's bad and i'll have to do 90 minutes on the trainer rather than 3 hours outside, let me please stir this up... as a framebuilder, a masi-watcher, and a just plain ol' interested third party, i always wondered why the masi legacy in the u.s. (ONLY IN THE U.S.) was pre- dicated on the lore that was exposed in that one 1971 article. all catalogs/brochures/printed material always highlighted the 'merckx owns 20' thing, 'the simpson-peugeot' thing, the 'maspes' thing, and all the rest of the text always accompanied promo pieces even through to the early '80s. in other words, had nothing happened since? please note that i'm speaking in reference to the u.s. promo stuff. there were never such printed pieces in italy generated by masi milano... what was the question? e-RICHIE
