Threadless stems are very classic -- they have just taken a long time to come back. About 100 years ago BSA provided bars with integral stem that clamped onto a plain steerer -- ever so modern by today's standards. I have a 1908 example of this, but recall seeing an advertisement of 1902 or 1904 showing the same arrangement. I don't doubt that other makers did the same thing too
