I can't add anything to what David had to say about Jim himself but I will mention one frame that I remember seeing frequently. A coworker at a shop in West Seattle had a Merz (unless my memory is completely shot) with the quirkiest lugs I'd ever seen. Asymmetric lugs. From one side of the bike they looked like classic Italian lugs - nice clean, simple lines. From the other side they looked like they'd been attacked by a madman with a fretsaw - all cirlyques and whorls. Great effect.
