I am very interested in this thread. I rode a UO-8 with Mafac Racers for years in Eugene, Oregon. I suggest earplugs. Perhaps a paper sack for one's head while riding. They are akin to a fart in a hot tub, everyone knows where it came from.
I switched pads to Aztec's and seem to remember adjusting the toe-in with visegrips. They were remarkably quiet in a heavy downpour and the noise was hardly noticable. The ultimate solution was an upgrade to 600 series sidepulls.
