There has been a similar concept made by a small german company WECO later. You can remove the rear wheel with the body of the hub while the whole freewhell remains at the bike. It was available in the mid 90s (but only for "on topic" high end randonneurs). My wife has a nice "Norwid" stainless steel Randonneur bought from Carsten Rehbein with these hubs. (Earlier version of http://www.norwid.de/Uber_uns/Trekkingrader/Quattro_Stagioni/QS_randoneur.jpg). Another interesting detail is that the ratchet mechanism of the freewheel doesn't use springs but magnets. I'll try to provide some pictures.
