Many would say to just use the right size post, but I've used shims many times to use the post I want. The only problem with shims is seatpost slippage sometimes. Usually all it takes is one layer from a soda or beer can. I don't grease between the shim and the post but put lots of grease between the shim and seattube. I also make sure the ship runs from the bottom of the post to about an inch above the seatlug. Lastly I'll cut away the excess shim with an exacto knife trying not to carve up the post in the process.
