This last weekend I was in Ocean City Maryland suffering from missing the Trexlertown Velo Swap Meet, and actually having a very nice time with my wife for a somewhat rainy weekend at the beach. I ran into Jill DeMaurio, also of the CR list, at Larry Black's classic bike display booth at the Seagull Century ride start at Salisbury State College. It was really nice meeting and chatting with her.
Classic Content: While cruising the boardwalk on my new / old Jack Taylor Fixed, I ran into a nice couple riding a George Longstaff Tandem Trike and had to say hello to them and get a closer look at the bike. The bike was set up for touring and had a great setup in the rear. It had a differential to drive both hubs with really narrow hub brakes (drums?) for both sides. That and two brakes up front made for what looked like pretty good stopping power. It was a combination of lugged and fillet brazed with some really pretty, simply shaped lugs and a dark blue paint that didn't show the bike off as well as I'd have personally liked. When asked about getting it from England I was told they'd bought it used from someone in California. The gentleman said he also owned a Bob Jackson racing trike. I was so struck with envy that I'd forgotten to ask if they belonged to list until they were out of sight.
I suppose a racing trike wouldn't have the differential or hub brakes in order to save weight, but I'd sure like to have them when/if I get that trike I've always wanted. Who would I race on it? Does anyone on the list have a trike with the differential? And if so, just how does it work?
On another note, the Jack Taylor curved seat tube fixed frame I bought at this year's Cirque appears to be late '70's by Dale's serial number's list rather than the 1973 I was originally quoted. It may not have a Richard Sachs type ride, but Oh, what a lot of fun! I've got a few photos of it at http://community.webshots.com/
