I believe you are referring to the ubiquitous Radler Mass, a drink favored by cyclists to this day in Bavaria were they make it fresh at local inns. Technically soda and beer, but typically lemonade with beer. Many Germans I know (including my wife) are quite adamant about its healthful properties and are most insistent on drinking great qualities while doing any kind of outside activity in the summer. Of course you must use freshly brewed warm beer with a high yeast content. Sounds disgusting, but its actually quite refreshing and pleasant.

Classic content: I have on good authority that German cyclists of the classic era were quite hip on this beverage to increase their mojo.
