I have seen a couple of English Hercules 3 spds that were very nice. With one of them, the bike shop owner had taken and put 700c wheels on and replaced the original brakes with some ten speed non-recessed bolt brakes.
Hercules was also a domestic German bicycle/moped/motorcycle (trash can
lids?) manufacturer. US soldiers stationed around Nuremburg sometimes
have brought them into the states. They also made utility bikes:
