Strangely enough, I tend to view the vintage treasures as points of departure. I think what I would really like, for myself, are new bikes built by people who appreciate the same things in vintage machines that I do. I'd like to be in a position where I could help support those who are building bikes today with an eye to what has always worked well.
In a perfect world, where library tech assistants were paid huge salaries, I would probably commission (in no particular order) -
Richard Sachs for one of his elegant road racing machines. I'd probably ask for his interpretation of Paris-Roubaix angles as a concession to my out-o'-shape body. Above all, it would need to be that glorious red. Any lug pattern he felt like using would be fine.
Phil Brown for his interpretation of a randonneur bike with 700C wheels. Americanized, but still using friction bar-end shifting, thank you very much.
Mike Barry of Mariposa for a slightly modernized take on a cycle-camping machine. Brazed-on Mafacs with 26-in/559 wheels? Why not? Full fenders, lamps, racks, etc., natch. Something that splits the difference between Larry Strung's bike and Douglas Brooks' beautiful ride.
Brian Baylis for a version (in my size!) of that cool road fixed-gear he brought to the '01 Cirque. What was the color featured on the site - "Baylis Blue?" That would be exquisite ...
David Bohm of Bohemian ... I'm truly torn. That stunning stem with the multiple extension pieces makes me think "French rando trials bike," but the lugs make me think again, "English gentleman's light touring bike ..." I know, I know - in a perfect world, I could afford both, right?
