ive run cables to sturmeys both along the top tube/seatstay and down tube/chainstay... it works either way. but like sheldon mentions, the key is in reducing the friction in the system.on my work bike i run top tube cable routing, but with no pulley - ive got a little bit of cable housing to make the jump from just in front of my s&s coupling to just behind the seat tube on the seatstay... more friction than a pulley, but it works just fine. down tube under the bb routing should work just fine with an aw... the times ive put bikes together in that same configuration, ive never had a problem...
