Think of it this way, how many good local US or Canadian builders do you know? Now take a country where cycling is a national love and think about how many good local builders they have in France. 99% of the bikes you'll find in the states from France are either mass-produced or very special. Personally I don't know many of the smaller French builders, but I'm sure frankophiles like Sheldon and Jobst do. Just like everywhere in the world that loves cycling you'll never know more than 99% of there bike until you go there and hunt down the builders. I'll be moving to Belgium in a year or two and one of my first projects is to find all the smaller builders I
can.
