Yeah, it wasn't my intention to make it sound like today's bike are bad. And I agree there is a large material choice and construction choice today. However, in my - perhaps untrained eye - if I take a subset; in this case aluminium/carbon vs. subset lugged steel - I see more variety in the lugged steel. But I will agree there are some fine bikes today and a lot of variety.
Enough of this of topic stuff let's get back to discussing obscure Campagnolo/FB parts !

Well lets look at it again just with the Italian high end. We still have
lugged steel bikes coming over as has been discussed earlier today. We also
have tig welded frames and bonded frames to add to brazed. To the steel we
add aluminum, titanium, and carbon. Now take these methods and materials
and mix them in various ways and combinations. Looking at just the tubing
there has never in the past has there been such a variety of shapes,
profiles, and compositions. I assure you if you took 10 bikes top end from
Italian builders of 1982 and placed them with 10 top end bikes from Italian
builders of 2002 you would notice that the variety has increased
dramatically. People that don't know sculpture may not know any difference
between Charles Russell and Henry Moore but when you see them next to each
other you know. Just because something isn't your cup of tea doesn't make
it bad.
