David,
The only Gran Criterium frames I've seen with only a number stamped in the bb shell I believe were made by Keith Lippy under sub-contract about the time Eisentraut was doing the same. That would be later 1975 and early 1976. Are the numbers very small (about 1/8" tall)? If so it's probably built by Lippy. I can also see the bend of the fork is not typical of the Carlsbad built frames. Does it have investment cast (triangle window in the back of seat lug) or not? The other Lippy frame was built with DuBois lugs; the Eisentraut frames were built with the investment cast lugs.
The decals on the seat tube are a bit far apart and the chainstay decals a bit too far forward for factory placement during the early period. Seems some of the later bikes were done this way but Faliero was a bit sensitive to decal placement when I was there.
BTW, Keith Lippy built very nice frames in the "early American style" in Encinitas, CA back in the early to mid 70's before moving to Bend, OR, if I'm not mistaken. He specialized in tandems for quite a while. I recently acquired Lippy frame number "069" which I'm scratching up some parts for. It's 53cm c-t and a touring geometry so I'm going to make a long day rider out of it. Once freshly painted and reassembled I'm going to ride the crap out of it (with all due respect) and then put it away after reasonable care. It should be nearly pristine even when I kick the bucket and someone else takes charge. Hopefully someone who will do the same for her. Suddenly I'm beginning to look like a snake that has just consumed a large rat; my bike collection has jumped up 4 bikes in recent weeks with various deals I've made lately and I've a big bulge in my belly!
