I'll second that statement, Dale My "favorite" packing job by a bike shop: Tied the pedals/cages dangling from the top tube, letting them bang and scratch and move from the seat tube to the head tube and back and forth... Cosmetically ruined a mint 70's Nishiki tourer. When I called and spoke to the shop owner, he said that was how they always packed bikes, and the bike wasn't worth much anyway, so I shouldn't worry about it. He also refused any sending me any kind of compensation.

On the other hand, I seen many masterful, almost Zen, packing jobs by shops that obviously took pride in their work and understood the importance of protecting the bike for the receiving buyer. -Dan Borden in Brookine, MA
