Assuming that we're talking about a eat post, stem or brake lever, the shop's proprietor would have said "sono uguale" or "quasi lo stesso" and that would have been the end of it. I experienced this myself at the Cicli Romeo shop in Rome. I probably spent two hours comparing Cinelli, TTT and ITM stems while the exasperated owner kept repeating "sono uguale" (to no avail).
