I would refer you to the Fixed-Gear mailing list:

You ain't too old. I am 56, been riding fixed off and on for 20 years. Fixed gear pedal can be whatever your preference might be. Crank arm lengths are sometimes shorter than for road use but will depend of your height and preferences...

I strongly recommend a brake, especially for someone new to riding fixed. One brake should be sufficient; usually the front.

Being fixed can be fun. ---------------------------------------------

I'm going to be stretched and torn for heresy here. I have two fixed gear bikes and live in reasonably hilly country. On the road, I ride with a front brake. Been doing that for a quarter century, just like I wear a helmet. But that's not the heresy:

I actually ride a '53 Sturmey ASC 3-speed fixed gear rather frequently, particularly in bad weather. I figure that I'm no longer strong enough to kill it, and if it wears something out I'll have the fun of finding obsolete parts (good luck). I don't think our son (whose rides burn gasoline) wants to inherit it. I don't care what they go for on ebay, it adds to the cycling experience every time I ride with it. And reminds me of the great friend who gave it to me back about '75 when they weren't cult items.

For some, bikes are art and eye candy. That's ok. For me, they're glorious machines to use, and use them I do. Viva la patina! (and the scrapes that ensue).
