Ray,

It is very difficult to explain all that I see when I look at finished lugs on a frame. There are so many factors. The lugs must also be in harmony with the rest of the fittings on the frame and the purpose and theme of the bike in question. Sometimes what may bother me is that two "conflicting" styles were mixed with a result that clashes somehow. Sometimes it is a poor job of exicution. Most often it is because nothing at all was done. There is so much more to it than I can explain because every bike and lug has so many possibilities. Often I judge how well one used the options available. Different lugs finish up in different ways; the choice of lugs matters. The reason so many miss all of these subleties is because they are so subtle. Like I said before, the best way to learn to look deeper is to have several examples of various styles in the same place at the same time in order to make direct comparisons. Maybe at Le Cirque or somewhere I can conduct "Le Tour de Lug Finishing". An event like that is the prime location for such a demonstration. Any takers? I could select a lineup of the best examples of the main differences and go through them one by one, with all of them right in front of everybody to compare first hand.

Brian Baylis La Mesa, CA Sorry about my last few posts; I let them fly without rereading to correct the obvious spelling errors. Trying to make up lost ground from the lost writings.
