I've used American Express Travellers Cheques for several overseas transactions, as requested by the UK sellers. The wheels fell off one transaction when the USPS Global Priorty envelope with $600 worth of AmEx checks never arrived in the UK. I contacted AmEx to file a claim, and when I described the circumstances of the loss, I was informed that sending travellers checks thru the mail violates their policy and thereby invalidates their replacement guarantee. Siince I signed the top and bottom lines, they could be cashed by anyone, even though I also put the name of the (well respected) seller on them. AmEx said they may, at their discetion, possibly refund the money after an extended period which may indicate they were lost and destroyed, rather than stolen. However, I would be responsible to reimburse AmEx should they ever show up and are cashed. I guess the moral (if you can call it that) is to lie. If you send travellers checks through the mail and they are lost, claim they fell out of your pocket at the airport and that they were not countersigned. I know that a lot of sellers overseas, say for instance in a country like Germany, they prefer payment wired to their bank, insured envelope with straight cash inside, or international money orders. Has anyone ever tried using Traveler's Checks? I get them free from my bank and they seem to be a cheap alternative for me. When I was overseas I used them, and they seem to have been accepted by most everybody. If not, I was always able to go and cash them at a bank without extra charges. I would like to know what peoples experience or opinions have been with Travelers Checks type of payment. I would especially like to hear from our overseas list members.
