Rob Anderson asked:
"The other questions have to do with the wheels. They are Schwinn approved 260 rims, made in France, laced 2X to Campagnolo large-flange hubs. The hubs are odd in that the flanges have been drilled between the spoke holes. The holes are 3mm across, and appear to have been quite professionally done--all perfectly centered and with smooth edges. Did Campy do this? Did Schwinn? The bike shop? (the shop sticker, from "Casa d'Oro Cycles" in Spring Valley, CA is still intact.)"
I recently acquired a wheel set with 72 hole hubs and was told they were from a Paramount. Mine are 27" road wheels. A check of the archives indicates that Schwinn did this to correct a mistake they made (according to Larry Black)

I performed a similar spoke hole drilling procedure on an old Atom drum brake hub for a Schwinn Twinn so that I could use 14 gauge spokes during a MTB rim transplant. The original holes were for some oversized tandem gauge spokes. I didn't notice any lightening effect.
