Paolo,

Looks as if you understand the codes. Circle with 2 being 1982. The late record arms with no flutes can have a square with 11 or 22 inside, possibly other numbers too.

The latter part of your question is subjective.

My experience is that bikeshops and bike customers do all kinds of weird and

wonderful things when building their bikes, so it's basically impossible to say that one thing or another in wrong.

If you bought a new bike in 1982, and buy a new frame in 1985, and transfer the parts, is this "wrong" ??

There is something different about building a contemporary bike for riding, and keeping it for 20 years, and building one for the collection, that you wanted to own 20 years ago. That said, personally, I have a very strong opinion that parts should be of the same year as frame, but that's just an opinion. I supposed this is partially a reaction I've had to separate myself from those who don't know the difference, or don't care.

Paolo from Santa Monica, asked lots of questions when he wrote:

Does the gruppo have to have a '84-'85 date for the bike to be correct, will a circle 2, was the circle 1 crankset (not original) that is broken 'correct'? Did the shops install, say a 1982 gruppo, on a '85 bike? Are the later non fluted cranks OK on this?
